The Tortured Life of a Comedian

I saw “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work” last night. It was a really well-done film about a really complex woman - someone who is crass, warm, gifted, tireless, self-hating, and kind of brilliant. It left me thinking about what it is that drives us to perform - a certain neurosis and need for applause, and yet that’s too simple; there’s also love involved, at least for me, and I think for Joan… a true, unadulterated love of being on stage that is like no other feeling on earth.

Here’s Roger Ebert’s review, and the review from the The New York Times.
